It’s wild that Brittany Howard almost scrapped this beautiful song because the sound was too ‘traditional r&b’ and she was afraid of being put in a certain box musically. Black women musicians sometimes turn themselves inside out trying to defy categories instead of just doing the music that makes them feel good.
